ails have always been a part of a women’s fashion. Whether worn naturally or faux, they have the ability to put bracelets and other accessories to shame. The creation of the faux nail changed the way nails were seen for generations to come. Since the mid-twentieth century, faux nails have been a simplistic way for women to have long, beautiful nails with a simple application of glue. Initially worn at formal parties or special occasions, they quickly became a must-have for every day of the week.
Color was all the rage in the beginning. Pinks, reds and bright oranges were seen gleaming from the ends of women’s fingers. Anything to draw attention to these real-like accessories was the key. Towards the end of the twentieth century, however, the French manicure became popularized. A French manicure is created by whitening the very ends of the nail with bright white polish, finishing the remaining part of the nail in a light pink. The goal is to make the nails appear natural looking, but better.
Nail trends changed with the French manicure. People began to desire the look of authentic nails, without the work of growing them out and taking care of them. Similar to the colored nails, these were long and very unrealistic looking, at first. As years passed, the technology and understanding of the product increased, and a modern, realistic nail was formed. Today, these are known as Acrylic nails.
As most people know, in all actuality, acrylic nails are not nails at all. In fact, they are created with a paste-like substance, having only a piece of faux nail at the tip. Due to their ability to look most realistic, and the popularization the media has given them, acrylic nails began to dominate fashion from the end of the twentieth century (late 1980s) through today.
Going Natural
However, as Summer 2008 is in full swing, the trend to be natural could not be more current. Whether selecting bright reds, cherry pinks or even a French manicure, painting one’s actual nails is the way to go. Regardless of their length, showing off those natural beauties furthers the thoughts of ease, comfort and practicality, going hand-in-hand with summer.
Does that mean do nothing at all with those fingers and toe nails? NO! Summer is the time to show off those toes in great sandals, and with bare arms leading down to them; those hands will definitely be the focal point. Depending on personal style, grab some color, or get that French manicure, and let your nails do the talking!
All things bright
When deciding on which polish is best this summer, stick to all things bright. Think Cherry red, Popsicle orange, Lemon yellow or Grapefruit pink. These colors will allow your nails to be accessories all by themselves. However, if color seems too bright and the French look is not appealing either, stick to clear polish. This will allow your nails to at least look well kept. Also, do not be afraid to mix and match, pairing color on toenails and leaving fingernails clear.
Nails are, and will always be, a big part of every day fashion, so whatever is done, let them play their part. Keep them fashionable by staying natural and style will be your middle name this season.
