Energy Drinks linked to Risk-Taking Behaviors
Energy drinks typically have three up to 10 times the amount of caffeine than the average soft drink. Recent research by RIA Research, indicates individuals drinking energy drinks six days out of the week are more likely to have smoked cigarettes, abused prescription drugs, been in serious physical fights or violent acts, drank alcohol and participated in high risk, extreme sports. The study can help identify and predict what scientists call "problem behavior syndrome" within individuals. Energy drinks have a target market group of 18-25 year olds but "they’re nearly as common among younger teens."
Almonds: A Potential Prebiotic
Almonds have been identified to have prebiotic properties that could help improve digestive health by increasing levels of beneficial gut bacteria. However, the prebiotics must be able to travel through the upper part of the intestine without being digested or absorbed by the body to reach the colon that the gut bacteria can use to fuel their growth and activity according to the Institute of Food Research. Further human studies are needed.
Vitamin D Helps Reduce Risk of Other Diseases
Vitamin D is known to strengthen one’s bones, muscle strength and pains. However, vitamin D also regulate cellular growth, which can help prevent cells from becoming cancerous. It’s becoming known that vitamin D reduces inflammation and strengthens the immune system, which can prevent autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Increase Your Memory and Fight Mental Disorders
A balanced nutrition plan, frequent exercise, and optimal amount of sleep can "have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function; a viable strategy for enhancing cognitive abilities, protecting the brain from damage and counteracting the effects of aging" according to the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience. "Junk food and fast food negatively affect the brain’s synapses." To improve learning and memory while fighting mental disorders such as attention-deficit disorder, depression and mood disorders and bipolar disorder try the following potent solutions:
- Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, walnuts & kiwi fruit
- Folic acid found in spinach, orange juice & yeast
