Finding that

peed. Power. Agility. Reaction. Quickness. These are the cornerstones that make a good athlete.Cory Gilday knows this.
That is why the owner of Vancouver, Wash.-based Accel Human Performance has begun offering Nike SPARQ testing.
To be able to do this is no small feat: In order to become certified in SPARQ, one must submit an application, then wait to see if your qualifications measure up to SPARQ’s high standards.
But what is SPARQ?
What is SPARQ?
"It’s kind of like standardized testing for athletes," Gilday explains. The test involves a series of protocols that measure each of the five cornerstones.
Prospective athletes as young as 10-years-old can utilize the SPARQ test to help improve their game. SPARQ includes a ranking system, which allows athletes, coaches and trainers to compare their data nationally.
Created by Vern Gambetta, a multi-functional coach who has worked with the New York Mets and Chicago Bulls, SPARQ was "developed to help middle school and high school athletes maximize their abilities," Gilday says.
During the course of the test, athletes will work on foot speed, which includes 40-yard and 3-yard dashes. Running technique and explosion area observed. Next comes power, which involves weight-training exercises.
Agility is also measured — how fast one can change direction, or, as Gilday puts it, how mobile you are. Gilday also points out that this is different than quickness, which measures how well one can "explode" back and forth in short bursts.
And, of course, no athlete would be worth his salt if his reaction is limited — that is why it is also included in the test.
After the test is completed, trainers and coaches can use the data to develop detailed programs for their respective athletes.
At Accel, SPARQ testing is currently being offered for free to anyone who is interested. Gilday says that those as young as 8-years-old, on up through college, can participate, though their stats will not be included in the national ranking system. While the test can be administered in a group setting, Gilday says he is currently offering it on a "one-on-one basis as clients request it."
It is also important to note that Accel is the only SPARQ-certified facility in the Vancouver area.
